Job Prospects for Future Psychologists

Jobs prospects for psychologists in all sectors are projected to grow steadily in 2010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008, approximately 170,000 psychologists were employed on the workforce. By 2018, this number is expected to grow by almost 20,000. Clinical psychologists, school counselors and researchers are experiencing a steady growth, with nearly 16,800 new jobs projected.

The smaller sector of industrial-organizational psychologists, who work in research and development, human resources, wellness and marketing, is projected to grow by 26 percent. Independent and private psychologists, which make up over 30 percent of the workforce, are projected to have a healthy growth of 14 percent by 2018.
